Nate Olsen of University of Wisconsin, Parkside is glad he found the time to attend the Justin Fitzpatrick Rugby Camps in Milwaukee and Chicago last year as Nate so impressed Justin with his ability and his enthusiasm that he was invited to come over to Ulster to train with Bangor Rugby Club where Justin coaches.

Thanks to Justin’s partners in his camps venture, Ulster Rugby supporters’ website The FRU, Nate made the trip in January and February this year and during this time he was able to attend ten specialised training sessions with Justin Fitzpatrick and Bryn Cunningham of Ulster Rugby. The sessions covered the latest techniques in attack and defence as well as rugby fitness drills and nutrition advice.

Nate can’t wait to apply his new skills on his return to the Midwest and is looking forward to sharing the drills he learnt with his team mates at UW Parkside.

"It really was a step up for me to train with Justin and the guys at Bangor. It was great to see so much variety in the drills and everything was focused on match situations so you are always thinking where you should be and what you should be doing during a game.

I must admit I found it very physical the first few days and this is an area that we definitely need to improve as the fitter and stronger you are the longer you can remain focused throughout the game. I really appreciated the way the players and the coaches at Bangor talked me through the drills and took time out to help me when I was having difficulty understanding some of the moves.

I’ll go through the drills I learnt with Todd Streeter (the coach at Parkside) and I’m sure that the team will start to see immediate benefits."

It wasn’t all hard work for Nate as his hosts at The FRU made sure he enjoyed a varied social life during his trip. This included a trip to Paris to watch Ulster play Stade Francais it the Heineken Cup and a trip to Dublin to watch Ireland’s victory over France in the Six Nations as well as a few nights out sampling Belfast’s world famous nightlife!
